Arjuna amongst the Granite and Hoop Pines at Florence Bay |
A very civilised day was spent feeding the batfish off the boat, creating architectural masterpieces in sand, snorkelling along the reef, scrambling amongst the rocks and eating quiche on the beach. In the afternoon we made a quick trip around to Horseshoe Bay, marvelling at the amazing balancing boulders off the coastline. Then we headed back through the channel to The Breakwater, dodging amongst the Sealink ferries in the dark.

A week later we headed out again to Magnetic I. to spend a couple of days with friends who were visiting from the Sunshine Coast. This time we stayed at the sweet little Nellie Bay marina. We spotted Gypsy Rose in the marina. We had last seen her at Great Keppel and Port Clinton.
Magnetic Island is home to some interesting WWII historical military fortifications. We rushed through the schoolwork for the first day of term 3 and then caught the bus with our friends to Horseshoe Bay for an excellent pub meal, yet another gelato and then headed out to walk it all off on the Forts Walk.
They really like their gelato round here. |
A short way up the track we found a koala, asleep only a few metres from the path and not at all bothered by everyone gathering at the foot of the tree to take photos.
Along the walk various buildings from the WWII encampment have helpful signage to explain their function and historical significance.

The signalling station is perched high up on a granite formation with fantastic 300 degree views.
