Brolgas and Jabirus on the Town Common

Townsville Wetlands
Jane L. took us for a July afternoon stroll through the lush wetlands at the Town Common Conservation Area.

"Out on the plains the brolgas are dancing
Lifting their feet like war horses prancing . . ."
(Carol of the Birds - John Wheeler)

Brolgas - Queensland's emblem.
"The Prince of the Waders,
The huge Jabiru,
Up the dell in much haste with a long serpent flew."
James Jennings Ornithologia 1828.

A Black Whip Snake? We weren't planning to get close up for identification purposes.
Whip Snakes apparently enjoy scrambled eggs for breakfast (and small children), so it's easy to see why they might like to live in an area that is teeming with birdlife. I don't think this serpent has much to fear from the Jabiru as he was about 2 metres long.

Gurrumatji - Magpie Geese - Anseranis Semipalmata.
Magpie Geese flying in a V formation apparently expend 30% less energy.
Roving gangs of Magpie Geese flying to the moon.
