Sea Fever

I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by,
And the wheel’s kick and the wind’s song and the white sail’s shaking,
And a gray mist on the sea’s face, and a gray dawn breaking.

I must down go to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.

I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull’s way and the whale’s way, where the wind’s like a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick’s over.

    1. Are you referring to the long winded sea stories retold around a roaring deck fire or the density of our Egyptian cotton?

  2. As per the second last line of the poem:
    "And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover"

    There is no need for "superior yarns" as Egyptian cotton might provide....merry yarns are best.

    Sunstone Lodge to Arjuna:
    --Has the Acting First Mate figured out the diesel engine leak problem yet?
    --Picking up bargains in seconh hand book shops is obviously genetic. An early edition of Captain Cook's Journal will be OK.
    --Did he Special Sail trimmer adjust the trim to his satisfaction? and if so did Arjuna's performance improve?
    -- Crowdy Harbour certainly lived up to its name.
    -- Glad to hear theActing First Mate was not distracted from his lessons by the fish gutting.
    Awaiting next instalment.

  5. Sunstone Lodge? That sounds like somewhere very high altitude and mountainous.

    The Acting First Mate's attention has moved on to other more important issues - such as reading his next book.
